A new kind of television show has become so popular it has made variety shows of the past almost extinct. In place of even talk shows and sitcoms reality television is spreading to cover nearly every subject. From birth, to dating, to fishing and logging there are now shows for nearly any demographic. Whether it\’s competing in physical challenges for cash prizes or just allowing the world an inside look at jobs people do everyday, this new form of entertainment is making media sensations out of regular people virtually overnight. Mike The Situation is one of these overnight celebrities since his appearance on The Jersey Shore.

The Jersey Shore aired on December 3, 2009, and met with instant success. This hit MTV series introduced us to 8 young people. For one summer they worked at a t-shirt shop on the pier, and lived in their bosses beach house. We watched as they hit the clubs and partied night after night.

One member of the cast made a particularly lasting impression of many viewers. The now self proclaimed \’Reality King\’ Mike Sorrentino always thought he would eventually have fame. This hit series may have brought him just that. The oldest cast member of Jersey Shore he is 27, Before his T. V. Debut he made a living as the assistant manager at a fitness center near Staten Island, New York, where he is from.

Forming immediate friendships in the house were Mike and Pauly D. With similar family backgrounds these Italian Americans shared the same basic routines. They brought back the controversial term Guido, and seemed proud to call themselves such. They spent hours on their \’G. T. L.\’. The gym, then off to the tanning beds, and finally laundry. This along with frequent trips to the barber shop, seemed to be a cornerstone for looking sharp.

Mike and Pauly D were not the only 2 interested in casual encounters at the shore. As house mates spent night after night drinking and partying at bars and clubs, hooking up seemed to be on everyone\’s mind. Mike, however, was relentless in his pursuits, even bringing multiple girls to the house on the same night. He saved phone numbers, and called the various women he had met whenever he or his roommates wanted dates. His luck with women didn\’t seem to slow even after his reputation began to spread.

As with any group of people there were difficulties as well as fun. Tensions between Mike and Ronnie lasted most of the season after Ronnie began dating Sami, who kissed Mike previously. House mate Jenny even hit Mike in the face after he refused to leave a club to escort her home. Mike also played small pranks on cast members, including hiding a smelly mix of foods under Vinny\’s bed.

The 8 overnight stars seem to be enjoying the spotlight as they appear in clubs and on talk shows. We haven\’t seen the last of them. Mike The Situation, as well as the 7 others have signed on for a second season.
