Recently I spotted “SAVE the Drama fo yo Mama” on a tee shirt I was annoyed by the content. Soon I saw another somewhat rude t-shirt “Talk To The Hand”. My interest was caught by the sheer quantity of rude t shirts I noticed I began looking more closely at the messages on tee shirts at the mall. A remarkable number of them had the same kind of insult mindset. I was surprised. Insult and ridicule are not my style.

The majority of these rude t – shirts were not obscene, just a bit edgy. The majority were being worn by teenagers, which I expected. However adults who looked like they were part of the mainstream culture, the working guys and gals, the professionals off- duty wore many also. Where is this market coming from? Where are these tee shirts coming from? Is ridicule and sassy backtalk the main mindset of our society? Is my consciousness stuck in the mud that I had not noticed this trend?

Soon I discovered the online market is hot for odd and outrageous rude t-shirts. Hey, I discovered a company that has a successful 8-year history of selling irreverent and rude humor. Many are purchased as gag gifts. This is a hot niche market with a significant amount of competition among marketers. Some sites actually offer advice on how you can set up your own business selling rude t shirts. Pooshirts.com is one of those sites.

Another fascinating discovery is how many contests I found where people are rating these rude t-shirts and making suggestions for personalized variations. It is a sort of American Idol for the world of tee shirts. Some are rude, some are mean and nasty, many are funny. Some are grotesque.

Just when I thought I had learned more than I ever needed to know about rude T shirts, I ran across a site that specializes in short and sassy videos about T-shirts. You watch the 2 or 3-minute video and then rate it and comment on it in comparison to other T-shirts that have been entered in the contest. This site is sneaky. It is too easy to waste time watching these little tiny videos. So what it is only 3 more minutes. It is clearly designed for people with short attention spans.

Rude Tee shirts are international and often non-verbal. That helps cross the language barrier. They address common issues in everyday life, particularly on the urban scene, and especially on the youth scene. At first I thought they were only for guys, but the number of gals wearing these rude t-shirts changed that opinion for me.

So who wears rude t shirts? Almost anyone. Almost anywhere. Almost anytime. The time is now. The commentary is alive and so is the spirit of an otherwise apathetic and dysfunctional economically distraught and war torn world. You might not want to give one as a mother’s day gift. But hey, maybe Mom has the same sense of wit that you do. Rude t shirts are absolutely fab. Just do it.
