The air is crisp, and strains of hymns sometimes find its way to the radio–yes Christmas is here. What a lovely time this truly is. We find people milling about, making repeated trips to the mall to get the presents they have on layaway for the ones they love. In every other street corner, you see Santa ringing his bell, with a black pot receiving freewill love offerings to the poor among us. And what else is a more loved and familiar image of the season than well decorated christmas trees? They are firmly set in every home, a willing listener to the family’s holiday memories.

These trees are the natural hub for eggnog drinking, story swapping, laughing family members. It has been lovingly bought and transported from christmas tree shops by the same family to take part in an invaluable page of their memories. Scrumptious meals and joyful reunions are common events in this precious circle and special time.

Maybe there is already a worn and cherished family tree waiting in the basement. If you did not have a chance to bond over christmas tree shop hopping, surely you will get a chance in christmas tree decorating. Let the children in on it to create simply priceless moments. Allow them to design, plan and execute all aspects of embellishing the tree.

How about having one of those crazy and spectacular tree themes only a child can come up with? Maybe a space or princess inspired tree? They can collect appropriate ornaments and decor while you start hanging up the christmas lights. When it’s all set up, then they can begin loading up on whatever look they are going for. It will definitely be a christmas they can all look back on with a laugh or two. Lastly, crown the tree with an heirloom star or angel to mark this momentous occasion.

Let the child choose the presents they will give to their friends and other family members. This will teach them the value of money and encourage them to learn more about the personality of the recipient so they can give just the right gift. Have them pick out the wrapping paper, ribbons and card so they can wrap these themselves. Many times it is the awkward and funny looking package in the sea of presents that are the most appreciated.

Don’t keep the gifts in a ‘secret’ place. Believe me– they won’t be secret for long. People, children and grown-ups alike, have a way of sniffing these out. Keep them under the beloved tree where they belong. Sure, it will be shaken and scrutinized for hours by the curious recipients; but at least nobody but the truly mischievous will dare open it up in full view of everyone.

And finally, allow me to give you an advice I wish I received in my earlier holidays shared with my own family-keep a video camera on hand at all times. Priceless memories come up as the days that precede Christmas day wear on. Decorated christmas trees witness every joyful tear and laughter between loved ones, enjoy them while they are around.
